What 2020 Made Me Grateful For
This year has been rough for all of us. Personally, I would argue this is one of the most difficult periods I have ever had to go through, and that isn't even taking into consideration the additional stress I have caused myself. When I try to reflect on this year, I can't help but see things through COVID-colored glasses. I could swear, as the days progress, the four walls in my tiny apartment get closer and closer together. What's been helping me get through these - now that it's December, quite literal - dark days has been focusing on what I am grateful for.
I have gone through a lot of change this year on top of having to adjust to the "new normal". From two new roles at work, to learning how to live alone - this year has been very stressful. In August of this year, I transitioned into a role as a Financial Analyst on the not-for-profit side of the business at the company I have been working at for the past few years. What I am truly grateful for this year is working for this company, an organization that lives its mission to make the world a safer place. As we digress back into a state of self-isolation and lock-down quarantines, I am continually reminded of how well my company has handled this pandemic. We were just recently informed that those of us who are currently thriving from home, will continue to do so, until June 2021, the earliest.
Part of my passion as a woman in STEM is to look for opportunities to give back. When I was looking for somewhere to start my career, I looked at companies that had a focus on corporate social responsibility. Although I have been unable to use my VTO this year due to COVID-19, I have still found ways to give back to my community. I am lucky enough to be part of an amazing committee within one of my business resources groups (BRGs) that is working to bring a STEM summer workshop to students in 2021. Being an active member in these BRGs has helped me to maintain some level of sanity this year by strengthening my network and connections among colleagues, providing stretch projects outside of my daily responsibilities, and expanding my soft skills.
I am so grateful for a work environment in which the mission is lived in the culture. I feel so appreciative to be part of an organization that encourages my passion for philanthropy and STEM. I know this might be hard but hold out for opportunities that give you the warmth and joy that my experience does - it makes getting out of bed a hella easier.
Every day, I try to jot down three things I am grateful for. A lot of the time, it's silly things like chocolate cake or whatever TV show I am watching that is making me smile (I know I am soooo late to the game, but have you seen 30 Rock? Thank you, Tina Fey, for all you do). I know this may not seem like a big deal, but consistency is key. If you continue to write down your three things that made you grateful that day, every day, for at least 21 days, you can begin to 'trick' your brain into being more positive, simply out of habit. Encourage others around you to join in, too.
Today, I am grateful for my friends who love me like family, my dog's adorably cuddly face, and hot sandwiches. Every day I am grateful for the wonderful company I work for, the challenges that my role brings me, and the joy that my coworkers spread. What are you grateful for?
